The honey sets are very rare and are a highly desired finish.

"There had never been a chair like it. It was structurally daring and embodied many key aspirations of modernist design that were equally applicable to architecture and furniture," said Christopher Wilk, curator at London's Victoria & Albert Museum. "It was made of an industrial material symbolic of the machine age and was visually transparent because materials were reduced to a minimum, giving it an abstract quality."

The Chair's revelatory use of material and straightforward form made it an international sensation—nothing like it existed at the time. "Breuer simply changed the course of 20th-century furniture," commented J. Steward Johnson, Curator of the Museum of Modern Art's Department of Architecture and Design, leading up to the 1981 exhibition Marcel Breuer: Furniture and Interiors. "He is seminal. He started it all and made everything happen."

The structure is not just a means to a solution. It is also a principle and a passion.

Marcel Breuer

The unique cantilevered structure and simple design elements make the Cesca so unique. The lack of bracing creates a lighter-weight chair with some flex – not rigid and uncomfortable like many other chairs on the market. The single bent steel pipe also helps make the Chair lighter. The materials are readily available and easy to acquire.

Vintage Child’s Bentwood Rocking Chair with New Cane - $200 CDN

This vintage child's rocking chair has been fully restored and painted a playful sage green.

It's simply adorable.

The rocking chair we have on offer is a reproduction of an amazing timeless design.

The Gebrüder Thonet company was founded in 1819 by Michael Thonet to produce his chairs using a unique process of bending wood ("bentwood") that he designed. The company is still in business today, run by the fifth generation of Thonet's, with headquarters in Frankenberg, Germany. The Thonet company is still best known for its bentwood caned rocking chairs, the first of which appeared in 1860. These have remained remarkably consistent in style since their first appearance, as there is no reason to change such a remarkable design.

Rocking chairs are often seen as a place of nurturing, as the gentle rocking motion soothes infants and sends them off to sleep. They don't just soothe infants; they soothe everyone.

Rocking chairs are so comfortable because, when a user sits in one without rocking, the chair automatically rocks backward until the sitter's center of gravity is found, providing an ergonomic comfort at an un-stressed position and angle.

The gentle rocking motion has been shown to provide a faster onset of sleep as it mimics a parent rocking a child to sleep.

Not just for adults, for children and their favourite little friends too.
